Spicy, soft and full-bodied, the 2020 Syrah opens with black fruit giving way to warm butter and baking spices, followed by a toasty coffee finish. This wine has a lower acidity than most of our other wines and shines both as a sipping wine or paired with cured meats, light barbecue, and smoked Gouda cheese.

In the Vineyard
The vineyard providing grapes for our Syrah for the last 2 decades finally succumbed to phylloxera. The 2020 comes from a neighboring vineyard with similar soils and climate. The hot, dry year drives ripening quickly and we harvest on September 19 crushing the same day. Our lack of familiarity with this vineyard resulted in sugar levels that are high, pH that is high and acidity that is low, necessitating adjustments back to more familiar territory.

In the Cellar
After transferring to small vats, we begin a 2 day cold soak, inoculating on September 21. Fully ripe skins and seeds, deep color, flavors of coffee, dark fruit, and jam, juice temp 65 F.
Once the fermentation temperature rises above 70 degrees, malo-lactic bacteria is added. Peaking at 88 degrees, the fermentation completes on October 12 and the wine is pressed to barrel. Following 15 months of barrel age the wine is transferred to tanks for minor adjustments prior to bottling on February 5 and 6, 2022.
