Syrah 2022

Soft, smooth, and full bodied, the 2022 Syrah opens with dark fruit, blackberries and cassis yet finishes with toast, vanilla and coffee. Wonderful sipped by itself, this wine also pairs well with lamb, grilled vegetables, cured meats or smoked gouda cheese.

Production: 198 cases

In The Vineyard –

With vineyards in Colorado slowly recovering from a disastrous crop failure in 2021, we were able to source grapes, as we have for the past 2 decades, from the Grand Valley. Nearly 5 tons of freshly-picked Syrah arrive on September 21 and are quickly de-stemmed into 1 ton fermenters. While often bordering on overripe, this year’s crop comes in with some very nice numbers:
Brix: 22 – 24.5
pH: 3.51 – 3.66
Titratable Acidity 6.51

In the Cellar

After an overnight cold soak, the fermenters are inoculated and the fermentation begins. A few days before we expect the ideal temperature to be reached, malolactic bacteria is added. The fermentation temperatures peak in the mid 80’s and are finished by October 5th. The new wine is transferred to tanks to settle some of the solids out and then transferred to 2 year old Minnesota oak barrels. Following a full year of barrel age, the 2022 Syrah is pulled from the barrel, blended together, filtered and bottled in early October 2023.
